The Zimbabwe Heads of Christian Denominations (ZHOCD) has issued a strong and clear message about the importance of respecting Zimbabwe’s Constitution. The Church is alarmed by suggestions from some politicians and activists to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028 by removing the presidential term limit.

According to the ZHOCD, such a move would harm the nation. They believe the President must resist these calls and uphold the Constitution, which serves as the foundation of Zimbabwe’s democracy. The Church has praised President Mnangagwa for his previous statements committing to respecting the Constitution and stepping down after his second term ends in 2028.

The ZHOCD emphasized that altering the presidential term limit would damage public trust in Zimbabwe’s electoral system. They warn that such actions could create instability at a time when peace and unity are most needed. The Church sees this moment as an opportunity to strengthen democratic values and build a better future for the country.

President Mnangagwa has often spoken about his commitment to good governance, national peace, and unity. The Church hopes he will stay true to his word and avoid becoming part of efforts to undermine the Constitution. By doing so, he can set an example of leadership that honors the sacrifices of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and paves the way for a peaceful transfer of power in 2028.

The ZHOCD is calling on all Zimbabweans to defend the Constitution and support democratic principles. They stress the importance of holding free, fair, and transparent elections as scheduled in 2028. The Church believes this will promote accountability and show the world that Zimbabwe is a nation of integrity and lawfulness.

The ZHOCD also highlights the need for electoral reforms to make the voting process more transparent and inclusive. They call on the government to implement these changes and ensure that every election reflects the will of the people.

In their statement, the ZHOCD made five key appeals:

  1. President Mnangagwa should uphold the Constitution, respect the term limits, and ensure a peaceful transition of power in 2028.
  2. All Zimbabweans should stand together to protect the Constitution and put the nation’s interests first.
  3. The government should work on electoral reforms to enhance trust in the voting process.
  4. Members of Parliament should play their role in safeguarding constitutionalism and holding the executive accountable.
  5. Political parties must follow the law and respect democratic principles.

The Church believes this collective effort is vital for Zimbabwe’s future. Respecting the Constitution is not just about legal compliance; it is about ensuring peace, stability, and progress for everyone in the country.

The ZHOCD closed their message with a verse from Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” They view this as a timeless reminder of what true leadership requires: justice, compassion, and humility.

The Church has spoken with clarity and conviction. They urge Zimbabwe’s leaders to honor the Constitution and prioritize the well-being of the nation. A peaceful 2028 election and a smooth transfer of power will strengthen Zimbabwe’s democracy and set a powerful example for future generations.
