The accusations have spread widely on social media and in political discussions, especially after Chamisa left the CCC and stepped back from frontline politics for a period. However, Chamisa has now publicly responded to these allegations, and his response raises an important question. If he was truly working with ZANU PF, why has the ruling party spent so much time and effort trying to destroy his political influence?

Chamisa dismissed the claims by pointing to events that many Zimbabweans have witnessed over the past few years. He questioned why Sengezo Tshabangu would have been used to tear apart the CCC if he was already part of a secret arrangement with Mnangagwa. It is a fair question. The Tshabangu saga caused serious damage to the opposition and weakened a movement that had become a major threat to ZANU PF. If Chamisa was working with the ruling party, there would have been little reason to support actions that created so much confusion and instability within the opposition.

Chamisa also questioned the purpose of Constitutional Amendment Bill Number 3. According to him, measures such as these would not have been necessary if he was secretly aligned with Mnangagwa. Whether one agrees with his argument or not, it highlights the contradictions in the claims made by those who insist he has been compromised.

The opposition leader went further and accused the government of spending huge amounts of money to undermine his credibility. He claimed that individuals, organisations and institutions have been mobilised against him. He also suggested that political influence has been bought in an effort to weaken his standing both inside and outside Zimbabwe. His main argument is simple. Governments do not spend resources fighting people who are already on their side.

The reality is that many of the accusations against Chamisa are based on suspicion rather than evidence. Frustration among opposition supporters is understandable. Zimbabwe has endured years of economic hardship, political repression and disputed elections. Many people are desperate for change and become disappointed when that change does not come quickly. In such an environment, rumours can easily become accepted as fact.

That does not mean every question about Chamisa should be ignored. Public figures must always be accountable. Citizens have every right to demand clarity from leaders who seek their trust. However, accusations as serious as being bought by ZANU PF require proof. So far, those making the claims have not produced convincing evidence to support them.

What cannot be denied is that Chamisa remains one of the most recognised political figures in Zimbabwe. Even after stepping away for a period, his name continues to dominate political conversations. His statements still attract strong reactions from both supporters and opponents. That alone suggests that he remains an important factor in Zimbabwean politics.

The bigger danger is that endless speculation can distract attention from the real challenges facing the country. Zimbabweans continue to struggle with unemployment, poor public services, corruption and a shrinking democratic space. These are the issues that deserve the greatest focus.

If Chamisa has been compromised, evidence should be presented. If not, then the rumours should stop. Politics should be driven by facts, not assumptions. Until proof is produced, the claim that Chamisa was bought by ZANU PF remains exactly that: a claim.

For a long time now, Zimbabweans have been hearing claims that opposition leader Nelson Chamisa…

[3,1

post-599","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-opinions","category-politics
["GET
